The Lunar Tour is a fascinating loop trail that runs along the plateau of the Terrace of the Dolomites, behind the Rifugio Maria Restaurant. At the valley station of the Sass Pordoi cable car, the museum tells the story of the fierce battles of World War I on the Col di Lana and Marmolada mountains. Covering 450 square metres, with over 3,000 objects, the exhibition reconstructs barracks and trenches equipped with machine guns, offering a glimpse into the life of soldiers. Your heart will be touched by the collection of salvaged objects, handmade by soldiers from war materials, engraved with thoughts and prayers, testimonies of humanity in times of conflict.
The Sass Pordoi cable car, one of the first to be built in the Dolomites, represents a pioneering work that has revolutionised mountain tourism. Inaugurated in 1963, the funivia (cable car) was built on the initiative of Maria Piaz, known as the "Mare del Pordoi" in Ladin (mother of Pordoi), together with her son Francesco Dezulian. This state-of-the-art facility has made the spectacular "Terrace of the Dolomites" accessible to thousands of visitors, offering exceptional views.
The history of the cable car is closely linked to that of the Piaz family, an emblem of innovation and perseverance, and to the SITC company, which has always placed particular emphasis on the technological development of its facilities. Located at the Passo Pordoi, the cable car allows you to reach the summit and symbol of the region in just a few minutes. Over the years, the cable car has undergone significant modernisation efforts. Between 1994 and 1995, the system was completely renovated, adopting technical solutions that have expanded the capacity of the cabins from 30 to 65 people. For the winter season 2015/16, cabins with a modern design were introduced, offering an even more immersive panoramic experience. These new cabins are spacious and technologically advanced, covering a height difference of 700 metres in just 4 minutes, taking visitors to the 2,950-metre summit of Sass Pordoi.
The cable car is in service nine months a year, offering a unique panorama that transforms with the changing seasons, offering constantly new emotions.
